Udaipur the City of Lakes

Udaipur also known as the City of Lakes. Udaipur was probably founded in the early 8th cent. It is the historic capital of the former kingdom of Mewar in Rajputana Agency, ruled by the Sisodia clan, now part of Rajasthan state (India). The founder of Udaipur was Rana Udai Singh, father of Maharana Pratap.
Legend has it that Maharana Udai Singh while hunting in the hills of the Aravalli Range. A hermit asked the king to build a palace on the spot. The King Udai Singh established a residence there, Udai Singh moved the capital to the site of his residence, which became the city of Udaipur. It was a center of resistance to the Muslim invaders of India, who never completely subjected it. The city surrounded by a battlemented wall, is especially noted for its maharaja's palace, which overlooks scenic Pichola Lake.

Udaipur became a princely state of British India in 1818. After India's Independence in 1947, the Maharaja of Udaipur acceded to the Government of India, and Mewar was integrated into India's Rajasthan state.
Apart from its glorious history, culture and scenic location, it is also known for its Rajput-era palaces. The Lake Palace, for instance, covers an entire island in the Pichola Lake. Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, Jaisamand, Udai Sagar and Swaroop Sagar in this city are considered some of the most beautiful lakes in the state. Many of the palaces have been converted into luxury hotels.
